Take Heart: The Path to Resilience in Turbulent Times

I love the liminality of early January; that space of possibility between what has gone before and what might lie ahead.  The start of a new year is filled with promise—a blank slate inviting us to reflect on who we want to be and how we can make a meaningful difference.

Amid this hopeful optimism, however, it’s hard to ignore the reality of a social landscape marked by polarization and divisiveness, sparking tensions that seem to seep into many of our personal and professional interactions. For leaders, the challenge is not just managing tasks but addressing the human dynamics in organizational environments that are deeply affected by these conflicting perspectives.

Imagine walking into a conference room crackling with unspoken tensions, although nothing is said the feeling of unease and dissent is palpable. Taking a seat at the table,  you find your own level of stress beginning to rise—anxiety can be contagious. Then, one leader enters, not with arguments or grand strategies but with a profound sense of calm that subtly shifts the room's emotional temperature. The Freeze-Frame® Technique

Step 1: Recognize Your Anxiety

The instant you become aware of your anxiety rising, freeze your state of mind.  Recognize you are experiencing a stressful moment and just notice, without any judgement or reaction, your feelings at this moment. 

Step 2: Shift Attention

Move your attention to the area of your heart.  Hold your focus there for at least 10 seconds, while imagining you are breathing through your heart. 

Step 3: Invoke a Positive Memory

Bring to mind a positive, joyful event in your life or think about someone you love fully or treasure in memory.

Step 4: Query Your Heart

Keeping your focus on your heart, ask your heart for guidance on how best to respond to the current situation.

Step 5: Listen

Remain quiet and listen to what you hear, feel or sense as your heart’s response.

The Freeze-Frame® practice not only brings your system into coherence, but it also offers space to consider a different perspective while highlighting your freedom to choose. Over time, with more frequent use, the steps become so ingrained you may find yourself able to complete the whole process in seconds.
